Saurashtra University, established on 23rd May, 1967, is situated in Rajkot city of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat State. The campus of the University is spread over 360 acres of land. The jurisdiction of the University includes Amreli, Jamnagar, Rajkot,Surendranagar and Morbi districts. It has 29 Post graduate Departments on its campus and 238 affiliated colleges.
The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1984 and offers a 4 semester M.Sc. course in Statistics, M.Phil and Ph.D. Programs. Since 2006, it also offers a Post –Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management (PGDHM) which is a self-finance course. The Department is fully equipped infrastructural with its own statistical laboratory and computer laboratory. It has Two permanent faculty members, two Ad –Hoc Assistant Professors and invites visiting faculties for the smooth conduct of its teaching assignments. It offers the latest syllabus in its discipline based on CBCS semester system and believes in an inter – disciplinary teaching – learning approach through the latest multi-media based methodology often collaborating with other Departments like Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Management and Commerce. The Department has organized national level conferences, a national level workshop, a state level seminar and contributed research papers in International and national Journals. The present research areas in the Department are Construction and Analysis of Design of Experiments, Operations Research, Reliability, Statistical Inference, Applied Statistics and Data Mining. The Head of Department, Dr. G. C. Bhimani is acting Vice Chancellor of Saurashtra University, Dean, Faculty of Scienceand Director of IQAC. It proposed thrust areas of research in the future are: Statistical Quality Control & Management, Actuarial Statistics, SPSS and Data mining. SPSS, SAS, R – Language and Big Data Analytics facilities are available; Students are asked to conduct practical using R – Language, EXCEL, SPSS, SAS, STATCRAFT etc.
The naming ceremony of our elite building as P. C. Mahalanobis Department of Statistics was inaugurated on 29th June 2022 on the occasion of National Statistics Day.
